Construction Technology and Management

Background

Construction Technology and Management is one of the four disciplines within the Faculty of Engineering under Addis College. The Department is designed to deal with the understanding of the elements of construction project management and the study of construction materials. The construction is currently booming and the department has the vision to satisfy the current boom in the area in terms producing effective and efficient managers and efficient designers who are capable of selecting appropriate construction materials.

Vision, Mission and Core Values

The department works in line with the vision, mission and core values of the college. It is committed to using innovative approaches to ensure the continuous enhancements of human resources and in particular to produce qualified professionals who are well prepared to meet local and global development needs in the field Construction Technology and Management.  

The Mission of the department includes the following. 

  • Produce well-qualified  CoTM graduates by delivering practice oriented education with competent academic staff, state-of-the-art technologies and conducive learning environment; 
  • Conduct researches designed to solve real problems of the construction sector and advance the profession; 
  • Engage in scholarly activities that keep the department at the state-of-the-art level in application; and 
  • Provide research-based consultancy services to governmental and non-governmental organizations and the business community; 

Objectives 

The overall aim of Construction Technology and Management is to train and produce engineers who can manage and construct projects by producing efficient and effective management system.

The Objective of the Department of Construction Technology and Management are to:

  • Produce outstanding construction technology and management graduates who can:
    • Understand the social and environmental challenges and produce solutions as managers and leaders.
    • Create a learning environment that provides knowledge and competency in Construction Technology and Management
    • Administer project contracts
    • Conduct research to identify real problems on site.

Graduate profile and Career Opportunity 

Graduates of Construction Technology and Management Program are expected to:

  • Have practical and scientific knowledge of construction, process, methods, techniques, materials and equipment
  • Select and apply appropriate/modern technology to solve engineering and construction problems.
  • Have the ability to communicate through writing, and graphical and technical drawing
  • Demonstrate an understanding of advanced construction methods and modern equipment used in medium to large-scale projects.
  • Understand the Architectural and Engineering design methods and process
  • Apply general and discipline-specific design concepts and methodologies to identify, analyze, and solve engineering problems.

  • Conduct, analyze, and interpret standard tests and measurements; and apply results to improve processes.
  • Play leadership roles in the global construction of the 21st Century
  • Implement the necessity of Proper planning and organization of the works
  • Apply proper communication and reporting of the works executed and using computer applications for planning and scheduling work
  • Controlling over the contract agreed upon and specification

They are also expected to:

  • Analyze projects for constructability and identify sustainable alternatives for project components and systems.
  • Prepare construction schedules and milestones for projects.
  • Perform cost planning and budget analysis for designs and constructions.
  • Select and apply appropriate/modern technology to solve engineering and construction problems.
  • Conduct, analyze, and interpret standard tests and measurements; and apply results to improve processes.
  • Prepare contract documents for civil engineering projects.
  • Organize resources (human, material, and equipment) and lead construction projects with efficient and effective management systems. 
  • Administer the contract and monitor progress to ensure that construction projects are executed as per the design and specifications.
  • Develop and implement quality control/assurance programs, manage claims.
  • Direct the purchase/production/management of construction materials.
  • Apply general and discipline-specific concepts and methodologies to identify, analyze and solve technical problems.
  • Conduct researches to identify real problems on site pertaining to construction management, methods and materials, and find better solutions.

Career Opportunities

  • As a result of the need for enhancing,  and developing the different sectors (highways, bridges, dams, schools, subways, airports, water and sewage systems, and electric power generation and transmission facilities.) within the society there is:
  • A need for more specialized workers
  • Necessity to produce more residential housing, commercial and office buildings, and factories, as well as maintenance and repair to existing structures.
  • The need to increase in construction levels, the trend to more complicated projects 
  • The need to improve in building materials and construction techniques 
  • The increase amount of multipurpose buildings, electronically controlled "smart" buildings, and energy-efficient establishments

Research and Consultancy:

The Department of Construction Management applies a strategic approach in its Research and Consultancy endeavors by trying to meet the nation’s rising demands in such regard. Therefore, it suffices to say that our Research and Consultancy focus will revolve on rising industry problems in the Ethiopian Construction Industry.
